Subject: JOHN SCARBURGH/SCABOROUGH AND MARY JACOBS

I also have some information that I compiled from both primary and secondary sources on Captain John Scarburgh/Scarborough (b. ABT 1750; d. 2 Jan 1794, ?Northampton County, Virginia?) who married Mary "Polly" Jacobs on 14 Jun 1784, Southanpton County, VIrginia. He seems to be a reasonably well-documented son of Americus Scaborough I and Sarah Yeardley West who I show were married 24 Oct 1749. If this information is correct then it is impossible for him to be the same John Scarburgh who married Anne Kendall on 26 Jun 1759, Northampton County, Virginia; Captain John Scarburgh/Scaborough could have only been 10 years old or less! The notes that I have on him are listed below:

CAPTAIN JOHN SCABURGH/SCABOROUGH (b. ABT 1750; d. 2 Jan 1794, ?Northampton County, Virginia?)

John Scarborough aka John Scarburgh recepient of W6003, Bounty Land Warrant 1059-200 issued 10 Feb 1823. He served as Sargent/Ensign/Lieutenant in 9th and 5th Virginia Regiments in the American Revolutionary War.

John Scarborough married Mary Jacobs aka Polly Jacobs in June 1784 at the Southampton County, Virginia residence of her uncle and guardian Hezikiah Pitts; the latter gave signed martial consent 11 June 1784. This appears to mean that Mary aka Polly was under the age of 14. Before the Revolutionary War John lived at one time in Northampton County, Virginia . Per affadavit of witness he was originally known as John Scarburgh.

John Scarborough died 2 Jan 1794 (location unknown); his widow, Mary Jacobs Scaborough died 11 October 1853 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. Their sole heir in 1822 was their daughter Vienna P. Scaborough who was the wife of Charles Turner, both of Scioto County, Ohio. Mary Jacobs Scarborough was allowed John's pension on 15 August 1840; she is then stated to have been 70 years old (b. 1770). Vienna Scarborough granted 200 acres on Bounty Land Warrant No. 1059 issued 10 Feb 1825.

I hope the above information is helpful to you. It seems to relate to the controversy regarding the parentage Samuel Scaborough, Jr of Wake County, North Carolina (b. ABT 1760; d. BET 1832/1841) who are often stated to have been Samuel Scaborough, Sr. and Margaret "Peggy" Kendall of Northampton County, Vrginia and Worcester County, Maryland.

Lela, Your GGgrandparents and evidently your namesake Lela Harrison Scarborough who married Berry Kemp Horton was Miles Atlas Scarborough's and ADA Todd Scarborough's daughter. Miles Atlas Scarboroughs's parents were Miles Scarborough who died at Point Lookout, MD. during the Civil War, and Martha Newell Ellis , daughter of Berry Ellis and Sarah Rhoads.

Martha Newell Ellis married 2nd , after a long widowhood ,to my GGgrandfather Calvin Turner Horton.

Miles Atlas and his twin brother Walter Scarborough married "Todd" sisters Miles married Ada Todd and Walter married Mary Minerva Todd ,both daughters of Mary A. Williams and Moses Green Todd.

Miles Scarborough 's (who died at Pt. Lookout Md. and married Martha Ellis) father was Hiram Scarborough whose father was Samuel Scarborough Jr. (b. 1760 and died in 1841) Samuel Scarborough Jr. and John Wesley Scarborough Sr. were brothers whose father was Samuel scarborough Sr. who married Peggy Kendall. Sam Sr. died in 1804.

I descend from John Wesley Scarborough and Sarah Horton(Amos Horton Jr's daughter) through their son Daniel Scarborough to his daughter Rebecca Scarborough Pace, then to her daughter Mary Catre Pace who married Sylvestor Horton who was Calvin Horton's son. Their daughter Dene Horton married James Edwin Hoyle and they were my grandparents.

Looks like we may be triple cousins Ha!
