This is a free web site, and it is also free of advertisements. We depend on all of you with an interest in the Genealogy and History of the Eastern Shore and willingness to share research, photos, and other interesting material, to provide the content of this site. This web site is accomplished with all volunteer help. Our only cost is to the ISP where we purchase the disk space and connection to the internet. Even that cost is donated to Ghotes, Inc. Among our chief goals is the wish to provide a means for us and you to share information with others.

If you have any comments, suggestions, and material you would like to share, please e-mail our webmaster.

I hope to add an RSS feed to this site which will allow you to quickly see what has been recently added to this site. I need a few weeks to figure out how to do this, so keep checking the site for this new addition.

Also not all of the links at the top are working as of now. I hope to have all of the links working very soon.

 Welcome to Ghotes.Net!

crabbersWe have a new look, but our Eastern Shore family information, history, genealogy databases, court records, photos, and other resources are just as wonderful as ever... or better. This front page has been recently redone using newer web tools to bring this site up to the latest web standards. This should make it fully readable with any web browser, and most all screen sizes and resolutions settings. Sorry but its still not available for the iPhone and similar devices. We hope you like the new look of this page.

Please note that because we have added a lot of additional menu items in the navigational bar above, there are several menu items that do not have links and thus will not work. We will be working on these menu items over the next wew weeks. If you find a menu item that does not go any place and you have an idea for a link for that menu item or you can draft a page or two with information about the menu item please send your ideas to the webmaster. Your input to this web site is what has made this site one of the best. Thanks. Also if you have any old photographs or postcards from the Eastern Shore please e-mail copies. We would love to have anything related to the Eastern Shore.

The primary noticeable difference in this front page is the navigational menu bar is now across the top below the header. The old navigational system was on the left sidebar. This new navigational menu bar is accomplished with out the use of graphics, and thus it will be much easier to maintain and change. It also goes to a third level where the old one only had two levels. This has also allow us to have a lot of additional items on the navigiational bar. Hopefully this will make navigating our site more user friendly. Speaking of the number of additional menu items on the naviginial bar, you will also notice we do want to add a lot more "History" items. While Ghotes has always been about the genealogy and history of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, our site has always had a lot more information on the genealogy side of things. With this new front page and menu we hope to be able to spend more time and space on the history of the Eastern Shore.

All information on this web site has been sumitted by our members / readers. If you have genealogy or history information about the Eastern Shore of virginia that you would like to share with others please send the information to our webmaster.

Scroll through the Miles/Miles/Barnes Accomack marriages data, to find your ancestor. The latest version of the Miles Files V7 are now also on this web site. Visit new photos and stories, recently acquired. You'll be glad you did. The new design for our photo albums allows us to add more text information with each photo, plus the page has a much cleaner look and feel.

Thanks to you, our GHOTES community, GHOTES.net has become one of the very best area-based genealogy and history sites on the Web. Do you have photos or stories or data to share on GHOTES.net? Please contact Barbara Cox or our webmaster. We'll be delighted to hear from you. Check the links in the left hand side. New items will be listed there.

If you missed the Ghotes conference last Sept., you missed an excellent presentation by folks from the Smithsonian Institution about “The Boy in the Coffin”. The presentation was extremely interesting and informative.  The folks from the Smithsonian went into great detail about the investigation to find the identity of a 19th century teenage boy whose remains were recently discovered at a Washington DC construction site. The boy was identified as William Taylor White from Accomack County Virginia. You will find additional information about the "Boy in the Coffin" and how the Smithsonian tracked down his identity here on our web site.,  Our plans are to have our next conference in June of 2010. Mark your calendars and keep that month open. The exact dates in June have not been decided on yet, so stay tuned to this web site.
