Introduction

The Tilney Family was selected for a Ghote project because it connects to so many families of the Eastern Shore.

The Tilney Family History has been put together with the assistance from members of the Genealogy and History Of The Eastern Shore - the "Ghotes." This history was compiled using information submitted by Ghotes, published text and original documents. Some information has also been included which was not backed up with sources or proof. Where this occurs, it is noted, as is any speculation and is included as an aid for further research. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy in this project; however, it is a compilation from many different sources and we're human. The bulk of the information compiled herein came from will and deed abstracts. Researchers finding entries of interest should refer to the source text or original documents for additional information or details that could not be included. It was not uncommon for someone to marry more than once, and the Tilney's were no exception. Because the software will not show anyone who was not a Tilney descendant, this information has been provided as text where possible as an aid to further research. The short references used in this project refer to the following texts:

First Generation

1. John1 Tilney (II), son of John Tilney(I) and Alice Holand, was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, England June 8, 1618. John died May 28, 1701 in Northampton Co., VA.

He married three times. He married Ann Bouton in Suffolk, England, March 1, 1642. Ann was the daughter of John Bouton. She was baptized in Kippax, England, May 15, 1625. Religion: religion unknown. He married Ann Smith (Smyth) in Northampton Co., VA, March 1, 1647. Ann was the daughter of Thomas Smith (Smyth) and Sarah (N)(wife of Thomas Smith). Ann died before 1701. He married Mary (wife of John Tilney) in Northampton Co., VA, before January 5, 1677. Mary was born 1659. There were three individuals who were transported to the Eastern Shore with the name Tilney (or a variation in spelling). It is not known whether they were transported by an investor to earn land patents or whether they were transported as indentured servants.

The first to arrive was Symon Tillney who arrived in Warwick County about 1639. Symon's passage was sponsored by Robert Newman (Nugent; Chuck Warrington). A John Tilney was transported by Thomas Buttons about 1666 to Rappa County. (Rappa Co. Patent Bk 5, p. 521, Chuck Warrington)

A John Tylley arrived in Northampton County, Virginia about 1640. His transportation was sponsored by Dr. John Holloway. For his transportation, along with other individuals, John Holloway received a patent for 550 acres in Northampton/Accomack County. This family history traces the descendants of this man, as his sons and daughters settled the early Eastern Shore, extending from Northampton and Accomack to Maryland and Delaware.

In Virkus' "Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy, it shows that John was sent by the English Crown as a collector of ports in 1648, that he was a member of the County Court for 40 years and married Anne Bouton in 1642, and that he was of royal ancestry. Anjou indicates ("The Tilney Family 1658-1902) that John emigrated with three children in 1646, and the persons he brought over had freedom, after five yars service or thereabout.

If John had children by Ann Bouton whom he brought to the colony, their names have not been located and it is unknown whether they lived. Dates of birth indicated for his known children do not indicate their mother as Ann Bouton.

In a deposition given by Tilney in 1672, he gave his age as 53 and said he had been married on March 1, 1647. In 1686 he deeded 400 acres land in Northampton Co., VA (N81) to his son, William. (Ralph T. Whitelaw, Virginia's Eastern Shore, p. 444)

In 1750, the will of William Smith named his wife Susanna and a Negro, Pleasant. Land records of Northampton County indicate William Smith's land not far from those of John Tilney. 23. Sarah3 Tilney (John2, John1) birth date unknown. Sarah died before 1792 in Sussex Co., DE.

She married William Bell after 1737. William died 1792 in Sussex Co., DE. That William Bell married Sarah, daughter of John Tilney III is not absolutely proved. William immigrated to Sussex Co., DE and died there. He married a Sarah by 1758 and had a son named Tilney. Histories based on information provided by Smith Bell, Jr. and Hiram Bell in the late 1800's in Ohio indicate Smith and Hiram as grandsons of William Bell and Sarah Tinley/Tinsley of Delaware.

John Tilney left Negro, Jack, to his daughter Sarah, and Negro Pleasant to his daughter, Susanna Smith. Tilney does not name Susanna's husband's given name. The will of William Smith d. 1750 names his wife Susanna and a Negro Pleasant. A witness to this will is a William Bell. Northampton County land records also show William Smith's land not far from that of John Tilney.

Tax lists for Northampton County for 1743 and 1744 shows a Negro Jack in the following households located in relative proximity of John Tilney: Mary Johnson's (1740-1744); Richard Johnson (1743); Spencer Johnson (1740-1744); John Tilney (1737-1741); Jonathan Tilney (1742); Jonathon Bell (1744); Thomas Bell's quarter (1743-1744). From this, Vernon Skinner feels it reasonable to assume that Sarah Tilney did not marry until 1742-3 and that circumstantial evidence supports the theory that she married William Bell. (notes of Vernon Skinner)

Sarah Tilney and William Bell had the following children:

child 80 i. William4 Bell (Jr.). He married Susanna Shankland June 30, 1768.
