Introduction

The Thorowgood family was suggested for the Ghote library for several reasons: so many surnames are linked to this family and its members settled both the eastern and "western" shores of Virginia. Even if not related to this family, so many families were transported to the colony by the Thorowgood merchants and the name is forever tied to the settlement of the Virginia colony and the early province of North Carolina. To give the reader an idea of the breadth of this family, Julia Boggs wife of U. S. Grant, and Mary R. Custis wife of Robert E. Lee, were Thorowgood descendants.

This is a compilation of the research of many. Each has his or her own method of recording, circa birthing and citing. It was compiled with joy and should be enjoyed in use. After all, genealogy is fun. Use this information as a guide not an absolute.

The Thorowgood descendants also includes a small part of the Custis family. I understand there is a set of books out now on this family which might be useful if you are searching this surname. 1. William¹ Thorowgood was born in Norfolk, England about 1554. William died May 16, 1635 in Norwich, Norfolk, England.

He married three times. He married Anne Edwards. He married Alice Holbeck (widow). He married Mary Dodge (widow). William was appointed Vicar at St. Botolph, Grimston, Norfolk County in 1581. Adam is called his 7th son in "Purse & Person." There is NO proof that Ann, wife of Thomas Keeling, is William's daughter; this relationship is purely speculative based on her naming sons Adam and Thorowgood Keeling. Naming one son for a prominent friend is one thing, naming two sons? There is also speculation that Ann was a granddaughter of William Thorowgood d. 1635. Ann's descendants are shown here as theory in hopes that someone may find more conclusive information that would shed some light on her surname. It also provides a research aid as her descendants married those of Adam Thorowgood.

William Thorowgood and Anne Edwards had the following children:

2. Adam² Thorowgood (I)(Capt.) (William¹) was born in Grimston, Norfolk, England about 1603. Adam died about 1640 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA.

He married Sarah Offley in Blackfriars, London, England, July 18, 1627. Sarah was born in England about 1609. Sarah was the daughter of Robert Offley and Anne Osburn. Sarah died 1657 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA. Sarah was 18 years old when she came to the Virginia colony. Court records show her bringing suit on several occasions: swearing out a warrant on Goody Layton for wronging her deceased husband with a "Pish;" two men for making insulting remarks to her daughter, Sarah in 1644; and just days before her death she took a tenant farmer to court for improper planting of an orchard and "ground made waste of." She was described as "beautiful and high-spirited" with a "backbone of steel and an indomitable will." (Norfolk Co. VA GenWeb, Thorowgood Family by Carol Middleton; dates-Meyer & Dorman, Adventurers of Purse & Person, Dietz Press, Richmond, VA 1987, pp.459, 607)

He made a will in Lower Norfolk Co., VA, February 17, 1639. Adam's will was probated in Lower Norfolk Co., VA, April 27, 1640. Adam Thorowgood came to Virginia on the "Charles" in 1621. He was at Elizabeth City for the 1623-4 census and is shown aged 18 for the 1624-5 census, a servant in the muster of Edward Waters. By 1626, he is known as Captain Adam Thorogood, Gentleman of Kiquotan, when he purchased 150 acres on the north side of Hampton Roads. He patented 400 acres in Elizabeth City County on March 21, 1634-5 and 5,350 acres at Lynnhaven, Lower Norfolk County in 1637. This land at Lynnhaven on the south side of Hampton Roads was due him for the personal adventure of himself and his wife and the transportation of 105 persons between 1628 and 1634 (see names in introduction).

He was appointed commissioner for holding monthly court at Elizabeth City on March 7, 1728-9, served as a Burgess for Elizabeth City in 1629 and 1630-1632. He was a member of the first court for Lower Norfolk County May 15, 1637, vestryman of Lynnhaven Parish and the first church of Lynnhaven Parish was built in 1639 on his land at Church Point.

His will named his wife, Sarah, son Adam and daughters Ann, Sarah and Elizabeth. He asked that he be buried at the parish church at Lynnhaven.

Adam Thorowgood(I)(Capt.) and Sarah Offley had the following children:

+ 4 i. Ann³ Thorowgood was born October 30, 1630.

5 ii. Sarah Thorowgood was born 1631. Sarah died October 9, 1658 in Charles Co., MD. She married Simon Overzee. Simon died 1660. He was a merchant of Lower Norfolk County and owner of the ship "Virginia Merchant." He moved to Charles Co. MD, where he owned land with his brother-in-law, Job Chandler, at Port Tobacco, and another tract called "Rotterdam." After Sarah's death, he married Elizabeth Willoughby, who was administrator of his estate. According to Purse & Person, Sarah died in childbirth. She had at least one child when the family moved to Maryland and the one born in 1658, none living to maturity. (Purse & Person, p. 611)

+ 7 iv. Adam Thorowgood(II)(Lt. Col.) was born after 1638.

3. Ann² (Thorowgood) (William¹ Thorowgood) was born about 1618. Ann died before January 18, 1688 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA.

She married three times. She married Thomas Keeling (Lt.) in England, before 1634. Thomas was born about 1608. Thomas died about 1664 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA. Thomas was age 34 in 1642. (Charles McIntosh, Ages of Lower Norfolk County People, William & Mary Quarterly, Vol. XXV, #1, July, 1916) He came to the colony, transported by Adam Thorowgood in 1626 on the "Hopewell."

Adam Keeling sold land on November 13, 1693 formerly belonging to John Martin which went to his oldest son, John Martin, who died intestate, so it went to my mother Ann, widow of Capt. Adam Keeling, now wife of John Richason, who gave it to son Adam Keeling, who now sells it to uncle Alexander Keeling. (Anne E. Maling, Princess Anne Co. VA Land & Probate Records, Abstracted from Deed Books 1-7, 1691-1755, Heritage Books, Bowie, MD, 1992, p. 5)

She married William Jermy in Lower Norfolk Co., VA, before 1666. William died before January 15, 1666 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA. She married Robert Bray in Lower Norfolk Co., VA, after 1666. Robert died about 1681 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA. It is NOT proved that Ann was the daughter of William Thorowgood or sister of Adam. The research of Kirk Larson indicates that she was the daughter of Sir John Thorogood and Frances Meautys/Meautis and granddaughter of William Thorowgood.

Thomas Keeling transported his wife, Ann, in 1634. They came to the colony on the "John & Dorothy". Thomas and Ann named sons Adam and Thorowgood. Adam Thorowgood was the godfather of Adam Keeling; he named Adam Keeling his godson in his will and left him a breeding goat.

After Thomas' death, Ann married William Jermy, then Robert Bray. Robert Bray was the son of Edward of Biglswade, Bedfordshere, and dated his will April 24, 1681 Lower Norfolk County, VA. He named his wife, Ann, and also named Mary Okeham, John Okeham, William Okeham and Alexander Keeling and friend, Anthony Lawson. (Charles Fleming McIntosh, Lower Norfolk Co. & Norfolk Co. Wills 1637-1710, Colonial Dames of America, 1914)

Ann (Thorowgood) and Thomas Keeling(Lt.) had the following children:

Elizabeth named her brothers, Alexander and Thorogood, god daughters Mary Okeham, Elizabeth Keeling and Elizabeth Keeling and her "father-in-law" Robert Bray. 13 vi. Edward Keeling. Called brother in Adam Keeling's 1683 will.

14 vii. Thomas Keeling. Called brother in the will of Adam Keeling of 1683.

+ 15 viii. Adam Keeling(Capt.) was born about 1639.

4. Ann³ Thorowgood (Adam², William¹) was born in Lower Norfolk Co., VA October 30, 1630. Ann died after March, 1703.

She married twice. She married Job Chandler before May 28, 1649. Job died about 1660 in Charles Co., MD. He made a will in Charles Co., MD, August 24, 1659. Job's will was probated in Charles Co., MD, March 7, 1660. He was a Burgess for Lower Norfolk Co., VA in 1649 and Justice in the Commission March 24, 1650-1 and sworn Sheriff March 7, 1650-1. He went to Maryland by August 1, 1651, when he was commissioned Receiver General. He was a member of the Parliamentary Commission in 1652-3, defender of Lord Baltimore against the Puritan opposition, elected to the Lower House of the Maryland Assembly from St. Mary's County in 1654, which he declined because of his oath to Lord Baltimore. He was elected to the Upper House in 1658 but did not attend the session. He was justice of the Provincial Court 1651-53 and 1657-59. In 1652 he received 800 acres for the transportation of himself, wife Ann, daughter Ann, and five servants in 1651 and before.

His will left to his wife Ann, children Ann, William and Richard, and brother-in-law Simon Overzee. He confirmed a gift of a Negro man to his daughter Ann "by her grandmother, Sarah Yardley." (Purse & Person, p. 609-610)

She married Gerard Fowke (Col.) about 1661. Gerard was born 1606. Gerard was the son of Roger Fowke and Ann Bayley. Gerard died 1669 in Charles Co., MD. Upon Gerard's death, his estate was administered in Charles Co., MD, October 30, 1669. He was a Burgess for Westmoreland County 1663-1665 and then moved to Charles County, Maryland. He was a member of the Assembly from Charles County in 1666. Ann was granted administration of his estate. (Purse & Person, p. 610; his parents-Bob Thorowgood, ghote)

Ann Thorowgood and Job Chandler had the following children:

17 ii. Richard Chandler. Richard died August 13, 1697 in Charles Co., MD. He married Elizabeth Burdett.

18 iii. Anne Chandler was born about 1650.

Ann Thorowgood and Gerard Fowke(Col.) had the following children:

19 iv. Adam Fowke was born about 1661. He died in infancy.

6. Elizabeth³ Thorowgood (Adam², William¹) was born 1633. Elizabeth died about 1670 in Northampton Co., VA.

She married John Michael (Sr. "The Elder"). John was the son of Unknown Michael. John died before January 28, 1678 in Northampton Co., VA. John was a merchant from Graft, Holland, who settled in Northampton Co., VA. He was appointed Justice of Northampton County. The court suspended his commission on March 23, 1663-4 until it could be proved he was not an alien, and after his naturalization was proved, he took the oaths on April 29, 1664. After Elizabeth's death, he married Ann, the widow of Captain William Jones, and Mary, the widow of John Culpeper. (Purse & Person, p. 611)

A John Michael married Helen Cornough in 1660 Northampton Co. and was brother-in-law to John Cornelius d. 1656 NH. It is not clear which John Michael married Helen.

He made a deed of gift on August 27, 1672 to his sons Adam, John and Simon. (Purse & Person, p. 612) In his will, John named "my dear and pious brother John Michael all my Dutch books, one deaths head gold ring, and to his eldest son my godson Joachim one heifer." (James H. Marshall, Wills & Administrations of Northampton Co., VA, p. 106)

Elizabeth Thorowgood and John Michael (Sr. "The Elder") had the following children:

23 i. Adam⁴ Michael. Adam died 1689 in Northampton Co., VA. His body was interred November 28, 1689 in Northampton Co., VA. He married Sarah Littleton. Sarah was born about 1661. Sarah was the daughter of Southy Littleton and Sarah Elizabeth Bowman. Sarah died April 18, 1720 in Northampton Co., VA.

He made a will in Northampton Co., VA, October 20, 1689. He left his plantation to his nephews: Hancock Custis, Henry Custis and James Watt.

24 ii. Simon Michael. Simon died before 1686.

25 iii. John Michael. John died before 1686.

+ 26 iv. Sarah Michael was born about 1655.

+ 27 v. Margaret Michael was born about 1657.

7. Adam³ Thorowgood (II)(Lt. Col.) (Adam², William¹) was born after 1638. Adam died about 1685.

He married Frances Yeardley. Frances was the daughter of Argol Yeardley(Col.) and Frances Knight.

He made a will in Lower Norfolk Co., VA, October 31, 1679. Adam's will was probated in Lower Norfolk Co., VA, February 1, 1685. He chose Simon Overzee as his guardian in 1657. In 1642 and 1643, tracts of 400 acres and 5,350 acres, formerly patented by his father, were regranted to Adam as "son & heir of Capt. Adam Thorrowgood." He was Lt. Colonel of the Militia, Burgess for Lower Norfolk County 1664-1670, and Justice and Sheriff in 1669. He named his wife and children in his will and that his "executrix cause my body to bee interred in the Church of Linhaven in the grave of my father and that shee cause a tombstone of marble to be sent for with the Coate Armes of Sir George Yeardley and myselfe and the same inscription as upon the broaken tomb, and the same to be layd over my grave and the other over the grave of my mother." (Purse & Person, p. 611)

He made a will in Lower Norfolk Co., VA, April 25, 1683. Adam named his father-in-law John Martin, brother Alexander and brotherh-in-law Lt. Col. Anthony Lawson. He made a will in Charles Co., MD, January 6, 1734. Gerard deposed on November 12, 1725 that he was 63 years old. He was a planter and representative in the Lower House of the Maryland Assembly from Charles County from 1704 to 1707. She married William Dent in Charles Co., MD, February 8, 1684. William was born 1660. William was the son of Thomas Dent and Rebecca Wilkinson. William died about 1705 in Charles Co., MD. William named his wife Elizabeth in his will and left his son, George, the plantation at Port Tobacco. He made a codicil on March 1, 1703 and made provision for Mrs. Anne Fowke, mother of my wife Elizabeth. He married second Sarah Brooke. (Purse & Person, p. 615) Elizabeth died between October, 1702 and March, 1703, when she was named in her husband's will and when he made a codicil to that will. (Purse & Person, p. 615)

Argol died 1682 in Northampton Co., VA. He made a will in Northampton Co., VA, January 3, 1681. Thomas Ryding was his guardian, and on July 28, 1664, he chose John Custis. He succeeded to his father's estate and made a marriage contract with Sarah Michael on January 23, 1670/1. He was Sheriff of Northampton County. (Purse & Person, p. 728)

She married James Watt (Dr.) about 1684. James died 1686 in Northampton Co., VA. He made a will in Northampton Co., VA, August 14, 1685. She married Thomas Maddux about 1687. Thomas was born about June, 1651. Thomas was the son of Alexander Maddux (I) and Elizabeth (Johnson). Thomas died about 1713 in Northampton Co., VA. He was under age 18 in 1659; his father asked that Richard Bayly be his guardian.

Accomack County Court Order Abstracts, Vol II. 1666-1670 26 Oct 1668 Capt. Bowman exited the court for the following action: Thomas Mattocks, who petitioned the court for his freedom, claimed that he was 18 years old, and that his father's will allowed him to "enjoy the benefit of his own labor" at that age. However, Mr. Thomas Teackle, the minister who baptized him, and other testimonies indicated that he was only 17 years old. Ordered that he return to Mr. Edm. Bowman, his guardian, until he attained 18 years of age, and then to be free. (Accomack County Court Order Abstracts, Vol II. 1666-1670, p. 63b)

Rev. Thomas Teakle testified concerning the establishment of Thomas' majority, October 22, 1668, that Thomas, son of Alexander and Elizabeth Maddux, was baptized in 1651 in the latter part of the summer when he was two months old."

Thomas and his step-mother, Eleanor, disputed over his inheritance and they were in court at least twice. Involved was a Henry White, an uncle of Eleanor's, and Cpt. Edmund Bowman, Thomas' guardian.

The will of Edmund Kelley dtd 9/11/1680, prob 11/1/1683, devised cow calf to Thomas, son of Thomas Maddox, he also named godson Thomas, son of Philip Fisher and left him a cow calf (James H. Marshall, NH Wills & Admin).

The will of Dr. Samuel Higginson 1702 NH Co. devised to Frances Page, Thomas Maddux Jr. and James Watt both a sword and Mr. Thomas Maddux and his daughter, Margaret were residual legatees and Thomas Maddux was named executor, wit: Thomas Savage, George Marshall and Obedience Johnson (James H. Marshall, NH Wills & Adm.)

The will of his wife, Sarah, dated 1694, named "my loving husband Thomas Madox to have 2 years priviledge of my daughter Frances' part. My three daughters to care for their brother James Watt and to keep him at school for 2 years, and my husand to care for him until James attains the age appointed by his father's last will, and if my husband should die then my friend William Waters to serve in his place." 1/19/1713 inventory of estate of Thomas Maddux dec'd. presented by his administratrix Rebecca Maddux (NH Orders 1710-1717, p. 145). 1/19/1713 upon the petition of Mrs. Rebecca Maddux the Court hath ordered that Messrs. Alexander Bagwell and Benjamin Johnson as marrying the daughters of Mr. Thomas Maddux deceased repair to the Clark Office and there to enter into bond with good security for that part of Mr. Thomas Maddox estate that belongeth to their children (NH Orders 1710-1717, p. 147).

There were three distributions from the estate account: children of Alexander Bagwell, children of Benjamin Johnson and to Thomas Maddux, a minor.

Northampton Co. VA, N98, (Whitelaw, Vol 1, p. 499-500) 1654 patent to Alexander Madocks & James Jones for 516A, east of 600A of Thomas Johnson. 1660 half of the Johnson patent is in possession of Alexander Maddox. In this year Alexander Mattockes, wife Ellinor, left this 300A to his sons Thomas and Alexander; he had a third son Lazarus and daughters Elizabeth, wife of Phillip Fisher, and Ann. 1659 James Jones sold his half to Thomas Leatherbury; 1661 new patent for 516A issued to Thomas "Littleberry" and Alexander Maddocks. 1683 Charles Leatherbury, son of Thomas, and his wife Elizabeth sold his half interest to Thomas Maddox, son of Alexander. 1660 Alexander Mattockes left his half to his sons Thomas and Alexander. The result of the above transactions was that young Alexander Maddox owned half of his father's part of both patents and his brother, Thomas, the other half, along with the half of the whole which he had bought from Charles Leatherbury. The record then goes blank until 1742 when 4 separately owned parcels equal about the same acerage as owned by Thomas & Alexander: 1742 will of George Nicholas Turner, wife Sarah, 1744 Sarah Turner left her home place of 338A to her son Maddox Turner. 1751 Maddox Turner, wife Rosanna, left to his son Maddox Turner. 1764 Francis Roberts Jr., wife Margaret, owned one of the quarters. 1782 William Major left a 338A part to his son Littleton. 1728 the 4th quarter was owned by William & Ann Jacob and they sold parcels to Joseph Greene, Thomas Addison and Thomas Benthall totaling 338A; Whitelaw suggests Ann Jacob was a Maddux.

She made a will in Northampton Co., VA, March 20, 1695. Sarah's will of March 20, 1644-95 named her three Yeardley daughters and James Watt and her husbands Argoll Yeardley and Thomas Maddux. (Purse & Person, p. 620)

She did not name any Maddux children. By the date of birth for Thomas Maddux, Jr. in 1695 and that Margaret Maddux was included with Sarah's son, James Watt, and apparent son, Thomas Maddux Jr., she is thought to be Sarah's daughter. Perhaps she wrote her will to protect her Yeardley and Watt children, assuming her Maddux children would be taken care of by their father.

She was named in the 1702 will of Samuel Higginson to receive residual estate, along with her father, and Higginson named James Watt and Thomas Maddux, Jr., both apparently children of Sarah Michael. Margaret is not included in the estate distribution of Thomas Maddux, Sr.

93 vii. Thomas Maddux (Jr.) was born in Northampton Co., MD 1695. Thomas died 1717 in Northampton Co., MD. It is not proved that he was the son of Sarah Michael, but by dates it appears likely. He turned 21 in May, 1716 when he discharged his guardian, John Powell. His selection of John Powell as his guardian further suggests that he was the son of Sarah Michael, Powell having married Sarah's daughter, Sarah Yeardley.

The will of Samuel Higginson, chyrurgion, dtd 3/10/1702, prob 4/25/1703 to Frances Page, to James Watt and Thomas Maddux Jr. two swords; Mr. Thomas Maddux to be paid out of my estate whatever I owe him; the said Maddux and his daughter, Margaret Maddux, residual legatees; witnesses were Thomas Savage, George Marshall and Obedience Johnson, and Thomas Maddux, administrator. September 20, 1715 Thomas Maddux Orphan chose Mr. John Harmanson for his guardian (NH15:206). September 20, 1715 Thomas Maddux chose Mr. John Powell for his guardian which he excepted of and the court consented to he having given bond and security for the said Maddux estate (NH15:224). May 16, 1716 Thomas Maddux acknowledged a discharge to John Powell to be his reale Act and Deed to the said Pwell (NH15:247, p. 206).

No evidence has been found to indicate that young Thomas Maddux had children and the land appears to later be in possession of his nieces (children of Alexander Bagwell).

Other debts paid from estate of Thomas Maddux: 10/15/1717 Thomas Marshall, 1/21/1718 Susannah Bowden, 3/17/1718 William Kendall Sr. (NH 16:46, 55, 61). She married John Custis (III)(Col.) about 1675. John was born 1653. John was the son of John Custis(II)(Mjr. Gen.) and Elizabeth Robinson. John died after 1704. John Custis of Hungars Parish, Northampton Co., VA, was elected to the House of Burgesses in 1684 but disqualified on being chosen Sheriff. He was a Burgess from 1685-86 and 1693-1699 and a member of the Council from 1699 to 1713. He was captain of the Accomack County Militia and Deputy Commander of the Eastern Shore under his father until 1692 when he ws temporarily suspended from all civil and military offices for contempt. He was Commander in Chief of the Eastern Shore in 1699. In 1704 he held 5,950 acres in Accomack County and 3,400 acres in Northampton County. In his will, he named his wife, Sarah, son John to whom he left "Arlington", and sons Hancock and Henry, and daughters Elizabeth Custis and Sorrowful Margaret Kendall, and Yeardley Michael (son of John Michael's third wife). He made a codicil naming his grandson Custis Kendall. (Purse & Person, p. 621) Margaret died in childbirth and the daughter was named Sorrowful Margaret. After her death, her husband married her brother Adam's widow, Sarah Littleton Michael. She is recorded on the tombstone of her husband as John Custis' first wife and daughter of Mr. John Michaell and that she had seven sons and two daughters. (Purse & Person, p. 621)

He married Anne Church. Anne was born 1678. Anne was the daughter of Richard Church. Anne died 1743 in Princess Anne Co., VA. She married 2nd Sampson Trevethan. (Purse & Person, p. 616)

He was Sheriff in 1701 and a member of the House of Burgesses from 1702-1706. He owned 700 acres in Princess Anne County in 1704. Adam sat as Justice October 7, 1708. Princess Anne Co. Deeds & Wills Book 3, p. 143 mentions five children of Adam and Mary; on p. 175 of the same book, division of Negroes was among three children; p. 504 indicates these children as Francis, Margaret and John on July 3, 1723. By April 6, 1726, son John is described as "only surviving son in Princess Anne Co. Deed Book 4, p. 60. (Meyers & Dorman, Adventurers of Purse & Person, p. 618)

Purse & Person shows that Francis, son of Adam and Mary, died by 1726, when his brother, John, was called "only surviving son of Adam Thorowgood." Mr. Creecy's chart shows Francis, son of Adam and Mary, as marrying Amy Lovett and living until 1740. Purse & Person shows the Francis who married Amy Lovett was the son of Francis Thorowgood & Ann Brittingham.

Various entries in Deeds & Wills of Princess Anne Co., VA indicate that Francis, son of Adam and Mary, did not marry nor have children and that he apparently died before April 6, 1726. (Meyers & Dorman, Adventurers of Purse & Person, p. 618)

He married twice. He married Elizabeth White in Somerset Co., MD, 1693. Elizabeth was born in Somerset Co., MD October 20, 1674. Elizabeth was the daughter of John White and Sarah Keyser. He made a will in Princess Anne Co., VA, February 13, 1740. Meyer & Dorman, Adventurers of Purse & Person, p. 619 shows this Francis as the son of Francis and Anne Brittingham. The Creecy Chart shows the Francis who married Amy Lovett as the son of Adam Thorowgood and Mary Sayer. Creecy notes that Francis of Francis was entrusted with the appraisement of his father, Francis Thorowgood's, estate August 7, 1723. The problem is that there are two Francis Thorowgoods, first cousins, one the son of Adam and Mary Sayer Thorowgood, the other the son of Francis and Anne Brittingham Thorowgood. Both Francis Thorowgoods were living in 1723 when one received distribution of Negroes (son of Adam and Mary) and one is handling his father's estate (son of Francis and Anne). Adam and Mary Sayer Thorowgood did have a son Francis and a son John; John is called "only surviving son" of Adam Thorowgood in 1726 and since the Francis who married Amy Lovett lived until 1740, this journal follows the early family as set down by Meyers & Dorman.

Her aunt, Dorothy, appears to have been her first guardian and Thomas Marshall on his marriage to Patience became her next guardian.
