Little is known of John Mapp. His daughter Ann Mapp was baptized in Hungars Parish, Northampton Co.
, Virginia 5 May 1661.
His cattle mark, recorded in 1665, was "underhalfed on both ears and hole in both ears."
He did not leave a will but his death occured before 28 Feb 1687, when his son John Mapp petitioned his
mother for a hand mill, which had been given him by his deceased father in his lifetime.

During the first years of their married life George B and Ann James Edmunds Mapp lived at the Wharton
Farm, also known as the Nannie Wharton Place, which had been willed to Nannie Wharton Edmunds by
her brother William Wharton and was willed to Ann James Edmunds Mapp by her father.
George Bowdoin and Ann attended the Methodist Church known as Burton's Chapel. It was named for
Captain Thomas Burton, who in 1801 gave the site for a Methodist Church. In 1834 George was a
Trustee
of Burton's Chapel when the site of the Church was deeded to the Philadelphia Conference of the
Methodist Episcopal Church by Garrison Burton, son of Capt. Thomas Burton. George was also a
trustee when the new church was dedicated on 15 Jan 1871. It was known as Burton-Oak Grove
Church and later as Oak Grove Methodist Episcopal Church South. He was one of the seven
superintendents who served the church Sunday School during the first century of its existence. The
Bible was taught for one hour every Sunday. The Sunday School of Burton-Oak Grove Church has
continued to the present day and is believed to be the oldest continuous Sunday School in America.

When reporting the death of George Bowdoin Mapp The Peninsula Enterprise called him "a sincere
friend, kind father, affectionate husband and consistent Christian, respected and loved by all who knew
him. He will be missed by his neighbors and friends, by his children, by the Methodist Church of which
he was a member for more than fifty years, but no one can appreciate the loss to the wife who survives
him, the partner of his sorrows and joys for the pst fifty-seven years.
