Introduction

I am not a Bowen descendant. This project started strictly as a way to connect all the loose Bowens in my data. With the help of Bowen descendants, Bible records, will and land abstracts, this family started to come together. Although they settled in Somerset County, MD (Worcester) by the second generation, William Bowen was in Northampton Co., VA before 1750 and was buried there in 1660.

Included here are the first five generations. You will find cross-overs to the Purnell and Northampton Marshall Journals and hopefully, you'll find a connection to a line you're interested in. The ghotes caution/disclaimer applies, use this as an aid in your research. As always, corrections and additions are welcomed and encouraged.

Asbury attributed largely to the efforts of Jepthah Bowen, who owned the land on which it was erected. p. 298 Newark - Newark developed along the old seaside road, which was intersected by an east/west road that led to commercial landings on Chincoteague Bay. Bowen's Meeting House, first sited on the plantation of Jeptha Bowen, was was relocated to a village lot, part of the tract known as "Yorkshire" around 1793. p.48 The oldest Methodist congregation in Worcester Co formed north of Snow Hill on land of Jethro Bowen at Queponco. Instrumental in erecting the first meeting house, Jeptha Bowen died on July 9, 1796, two days before Francis Asbury's visit. On July 11, 1796, Asbury noted in his journal: We came to Snow Hill, on Pocomoke River. "I called on the weeping widow Bowen, whose late husband, Jepthah, after being the principal in building a house for divine worship, died in peace. Here I met about one thousand people being unable to command the congregation from the pulpit, I stood in one of the doors and preached to those who were out of the house." p. 48 It is thought that Jeptha Bowen used one of his slave quarters as a meetinghouse at first but by 1796 he had errected a church

A Hester Jones is living with Eliza and John Purnell in 1850 and she's 86 years old; this is probably Eleanor. She was married first to John Heather. Elijah was not named in his father's will. That he is the son of Jethro Bowen is found in the Turner manuscript. The Turner manuscript says he married Nellie Jones. His wife named in his will was Elenor.

Elijah named his son Littleton and daughter Eliza and wife Elenor and "other children" (not named). Witnesses were Rila Bowen, Isaac Bowen and Jeptha Bowen. The family Bible of Littleton Bowen includes an entry that his parents were Elijah and Eleanor and there is an entry for the marriage of Littleton's niece, Mary Elizabeth Purnell, who was the daughter of Eliza Bowen.
