Legends of Lands End by Claude O. Lanciano, Jr.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church. Cary's Hampton home was destroyed

early in the War Between the States and he, his wife Caroline, and the first

wife of their eldest son, Andrew, refugeed to Richmond and it is believed

they all died during one of the many epidemics in Richmond and were buried in that city.

Cary Jones with a little help from Caroline, gave to the world seven beautiful daughters, not to mention

four sons. It was a remarkable contribution. He should have received a tribute in recognition. Instead it

was Cary who commemorated the girls by having a dance parlor built which stood for close to a hundred

years. Its partial removal made way for two upper stories on the north wing at Lands End. However we

live with an awareness of the steps stamped out on the enduring dance parlor floor. More important,

many progeny of the Cary Jones-Caroline Sinclair union survive as a living monument to their memory,

about as such as any departed could wish.

MILITARY: Naval Officer, Virginia Patriot and Privateer -- My ancestor's services in assisting in the

establishing of American Independence during the War of the Revolution were as follows: Captain John

Sinclair had many vessels of his own and used them in the Revolutionary service. Just before the close

of the War, when the Continental Army needed ammunition, and was still more anxious to locate the

French Fleet, known to have been ordered to America from the West Indies, Captain Sinclair took his

pilot boat "Little Mollie" past the British Fleet under cover in darkness and sailed to the West Indies. He

not only returned with ammunition but guided the French Fleet to Virginia waters where it played and

important part in the winning of Independance.

Captain Sinclair refused compensation from the Continental Congress, but at the request of Count de

Grasse, who commanded the French Fleet, a sword was presented by the French Government to

Captain Sinclair for gallant service. The sword still remains in possession of the descendants of Captain

Sinclair of Gloucester, Virginia.

John Paul Jones, a name associated with the families of Sinclair and the Virginia Joneses, was

employed at Gloucester as a seaman, and of 1777. As he was unable to own his own vessels and there

was then no United States or Colonial Navy only sailing vessels of the several colonies made up of small

ships from Coast Service, it is the belief that the "Bon Homme Richard" of which John Paul Jones was

Captain was one of Captain John Sinclair's vessels which helped to make up the Virginia Navy of the

American colonies. It is said in Abbotts History of the Revolution that there were but

seventeen vessels employed in the so called Navy each one was lost or destroyed before the close of

the Revolution. The following is a memorandum of the authority for the above statement:

Samuel Barron I:

Came to America to make his fortune. He was a merchant in Petersburg,Virginia, when he was called to

be Commanding Officer of Fort George in Hampton, Virginia.

Samuel Barron, commander of Fort George, destroyed by the great hurricane of 1749. After this,

Samuel Barron moved to Mill Creek, Elizabeth City County, Virginia. He had the following children:

James, Samuel, Mary, Richard, William, Robert, David and Ann.

An account of this tremendous storm was given in the biography of Commodore James Barron, An Affair

of Honor, by William Oliver Stevens.

Barron's grandfather witnessed the hurricane first hand while stationed at Fort George. The account is

as follows:

A threatening sky was observed to the southeast over the Chesapeake Bay. The wind increased which

soon brought the rain. As the hours wore on the wind and rain increased in fury. Sometimes the

downpour slackened. One could hear the sand picked up by the wind from the beach outside and

blasted against every object that still withstood the gale. All the while the rising tide was rapidly being

piled up to a height never seen before in that area. The waves were pounding on the shore, finally to the

very foot of the outside wall at Fort George. A large tree crashed over on its side with its roots in the air

and was driven against the land side of the Fort. With the impact the wall yawned and broke. Shortly

afterwards the seawall lurched and sank at the point, where it was exposed to the wave fury of the storm.

Finally the outside wall of the fort gave way, and the filling of sand poured out, leaving the inner wall

exposed to the blast without support. When this too fell apart and collapsed, the barracks took the full

force of the wind. About sundown, the storm slackened and in another hour the rain and wind had

diminished to such a degree that it was clearly spent. The next morning commodore Barron swept the

distant waters with his spy glass. He was astonished to see across Hampton Roads, a wide, sand

promontory which had not existed there before. A sand spit had been thrown up during the fury of the

storm, which was the beginning of Willoughby Spit.
