The Brown Paper Bags - A Christmas Tradition

by Mary Merritt Martin

My Great Grandfather was Samuel F. Ewell of Saxis. He had quite a few children and grandchildren, and I recall my grandfather (Finnie Ewell) and my mother (Elza B. Ewell Merritt) telling us about the brown paper bags that he prepared for each of his grandchildren at Christmas, they would consist of an apple, orange and hard candy and gum candy, do you remember the orange slices and chocolate drops? Well, after my great grandfather had passed away, my grandfather began doing the same thing. I don't care when you finally got to their house during or after Christmas, your brown bag was there waiting for you. It was a joy to receive, because he prepared it for each of us. How sad that it has not continued, because that was a special memory for me and my family. - Mary Merritt Martin
