First Generation

1. 1 Whittington birth date unknown.

It is very likely that William Whittington and Andrew Whittington were related - although probably not brothers. The software won't let their descendants be shown without linking them. SO, without further information on how they might be related on the other side of the Atlantic, their common ancestor is shown as "Whittington." It was the only way to trick the software. Andrew Whittington's descendants are included because they come back to William's descendants through his Fassit and possibly his King descendants.

This journal is a compilation of information provided by several Ghotes. Many, many thanks to them all for contributing to this joint project. It is posted here that others pursuing the Whittingtons might find the help they need. Where possible, female lines have been extended for a couple generations to aid in tracing to the Whittington family. You are reminded of the Ghotes disclaimer; this is merely an aid.

Care has been used in piecing together the various research submitted by several persons. Information which appeared to relate to 'other' Whittington families was not included (There were other Whittingtons in Talbot, Queen Anne & Calvert Counties, MD.). Data and dates from "Wilkinson & Kindred Families of Shelby Mississippi" by M. M. Wilkinson, in particular, shows the descendants of Elizabeth Whittington, daughter of Joshua Whittington & Elizabeth Nairn, who married a John Whittington and traces their descendants to Mississippi. This John Whittington is apparently from a different Whittington family and he could not have married the daughter of Joshua & Elizabeth Nairn Whittington, by dates (she would not have even been born).

Due to its size, this journal should be considered a 'draft'. Additions and corrections are encouraged.

If you are researching the Whittingtons or related families, consider this journal an aid, not an absolute. Particularly the surnames Bayly and White (both troublesome) are still (and may always be) murky.

Where the Whittington family links to other journals or lineages posted at this site, the project is cross-referenced, so you may continue your journey. Where this project and Mr. Wise's "The Littleton Heritage" mesh, this journal has been cross-referenced so you might find continuing generations in this book.

One last reminder, the following Andrew and William are NOT proved or even suggested to be brothers -

Whittington had the following children:

child + 2 i. Andrew2 Whittington.

child + 3 ii. William Whittington(Capt.) was born about 1616.

Second Generation

2. Andrew2 Whittington (1) birth date unknown. Andrew died after 1690.

He married Ursula (N). Her surname is not known. Some researchers believe she was a Bayly and related in some way to Richard Bayly, who made his way to Accomack Co., VA. Still others believe she was related to the Scarburoughs. If Winona Pfander is correct that Andrew transported Ursula, they were probably married in England.

One of the first settlers of Somerset Co. MD. Andrew may have been the son of Henry Whittington, son of Francis Whittington. His first wife may have been Margaret Young. Andrew was in Somerset Co. MD before 1652. He kept an ordinary in Somerset County. (Kelly Avant; Clayton Torrence, Old Somerset)

Their Majesties Justices of the Peace for Somerset County met at Mr. Andrew Whittington's house December 10, 1690. Andrew Whittington and William Whittington are included on Torrence's list of Settlers in Somerset Co. MD August 1666-1700. (Clayton Torrence, Old Somerset)

"The Whittington-Brown Book 1066-1965 by Winona Whittington Pfander, 1965, p. 127: Andrew WHITTINGTON son of Henry & Phillippa married Margaret YOUNG, dau of John YOUNG in Clifton, Gloucester County England and had 8 children. Margaret died and he was paid head rights for transporting his wife Ursula to VA. Dates in England for this Andrew Whittington would make him in his 60's when he arrived in Maryland and his 80's when his daughters were born and 101 when the court met at his house in 1690, suggesting the Andrew Whittington in Somerset County MD is not the same man of Clifton, England.

Andrew Whittington and Ursula (N) had the following children:

child + 4 i. Ursula3 Whittington.

child + 5 ii. Elizabeth Whittington was born February 9, 1670.

child 6 iii. Ann Whittington was born in Somerset Co., MD October 5, 1673. (Rob Hall)

3. William2 Whittington (Capt.) (1) was born in England about 1616. William died September 28, 1659 in Holland.

He married three times. He married Susan (wife of William Whittington) before 1647. He married Mary (wife of William Whittington) before 1654. He married Elizabeth Weston before 1659. William was in Northampton Co VA 1640, where he was a Lieutenant and Captain of the militia and member of the Court. He moved to Somerset Co. MD after 1650. His unborn child was Elizabeth. His third wife, Elizabeth Weston, married Capt. William Spencer after his death.

In 1647, Captain William Whittington received a patent for 450 acres on the north side of Nassawadox Creek. His wife at the time was named Susan. In 1654, Captain Whittington, wife now named Mary, received a patent for 800 acres of new land which was east of the land of William Stones' land grant. In 1653, William Stone, Governor of the Province of Maryland, sold the balance of his land in Virginia to Captain Whittington. This land between Hungers Creeke and Mattawomes descended to Whittington's son, Colonel William Whittington. In 1676, Col. Whittington sold 1,500 acres to Col. John Custis III, this being at the western end of the neck between Mattawaman and Hungars Creeks, part of the original patent to William Stone. (Ralph T. Whitelaw, Virginia's Eastern Shore, Picton Press, Camden, ME, 1996, p. 319-320)

William Whittington was one of the signers of the Northampton Protest against taxation without representation on March 30, 1651. Although only a local affair, it is noteworthy as the first expression in the English colonies of one of the principles ultimately involved in the American Revolution. (Ralph T. Whitelaw, Virginia's Eastern Shore, Picton Press, Camden, ME, 1996, p. 29)

Will Abstract of Captain William Whittington, will dated 4 May 1659, probate 2 Nov 1659 (60) - Intending to take a voyage to Holland. Residual legatees my beloved wife Elizabeth Whittington, my son William, my daughter Urselie, and the child my wife goes with to be equally divided, but to remain in my wife's possession until children come to age if she remains my widow. If my wife marries then my friends William Waters and John Penewell to care for my children's estates, and my wife to have no benefit of my land save only that which I bought of William Taylor where she now dwells which she is to have for life. Wife executor. Witnesses: William Melling, John (J) Turner, Margaret Neale. (James Handley Marshall, Abstracts of the Wills and Administrations of Northampton County, Virginia 1632-1802, Picton Press, Camden, ME, 1994, p. 60)

William Whittington purchased a ship (name of ship not given) in Amsterdam in July 1659 for himself and two partners. English Origins of American Colonists from The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record (1903-1916)

William Whittington of Northampton County in Virginia, mariner, master of the ship formerly called the "Shepherd, now the "Northampton, deposes 19 August 1657, aged 40. William Whittington of Ackamack in Virginia, merchant, aged 40, William Melling of the same, merchant, aged 49, and James Cade of London, merchant, aged 52, depose 1 Sept 1659 that in July last, at Amsterdam, they bought the ship called the "Christina Regina," now the "Northampton," on behalf of the aforesaid William Whittington, Lieut.-Col. William Randall and John Michell of Ackamack. (AncestryPlus; English Origins of American Colonists)

Information from Aart J. Vermeulen of the Netherlands indicates there is a grave there with the following text in old Dutch: "Cappeteijn Willem Wittinton uyt de Vergnjes, overleden 28 september 1659, begraven 2 oktober 1659." The translation: Captain William Whittington from Virginia, died September 28, 1659, buried October 2, 1659. The grave is located in the remains of a Reformed Church and is now exposed. It is suspect that Whittington sailed in June, 1659 on "The White Angel," which departed "the capes" of Virginia for Amsterdam, Netherlands, Jacob Lauwer van Slot, Master. "The White Angel" was captured enroute to Amsterdam by a St. Sebastian man-of-war. Although information from the ships list says that the ship never arrived, a Thomas Pollard of London, passenger, provided a deposition regarding the vessel's capture, and apparently, William Whittington, if he was indeed on board "The White Angel", arrived in Amsterdam, purchased a ship and died in the Netherlands. There is a picture of a ship of his gravestone. (Note: a request to Mr. Vermeulen has been made for the name of the village where the grave site is located)

NOTE: William was probably related in some way to Andrew Whittington, also one of the first settlers of Somerset Co. MD. Andrew Whittington's daughters, Elizabeth & Ursula married into the Scarburgh and King families, and their descendants will find their way to connect to descendants of Captain William Whittington. William's parentage is unknown but he probably descends from the Whittingtons of County Gloucester and may be related in some way to the early settlers by that name in Talbot and Calvert Counties, MD. (Kelly Avant; Winona Pfander, "The Whittington-Brown Family History."

William Whittington(Capt.) and Susan(wife of William Whittington) had the following child:

7. Ursula3 Whittington (William2, 1) birth date unknown. Ursula died about 1681.

She married Edmund Scarburgh (Capt.). Edmund was born in Accomack Co., VA about 1647. Edmund was the son of Edmond Scarburgh(II) (Col.) and Mary (wife of Edmond Scarburgh. Edmund died before February 5, 1712 in Accomack Co., VA. Edmund was surveyor and justice of Accomack County and sheriff in 1680. He was Lieutenant Colonel of the militia and surveyor of both Accomack and Northampton Counties in 1699. He deposed October 28, 1675 he was aged 26. Will dated May 21, 1711, probate February 5, 1712. (Myers & Dorman, Adventures of Purse & Person, pp. 547-8) It is believed that Ursula was the daughter of William Whittington and that she was the mother of four of Edmund Scarburgh's children. Whitelaw states that Ursula did not have children to succeed land, as her brother, Col. William Whittington gained possession. (Whitelaw pp. 318-21, 328, 331; Purse & Person, p. 548-549; Margretta Stevenson, The Stevenson Family)

William's estate was probated November 20, 1723. Next of kin was listed as William Bowin and Roady Bowin was appointed to administer. (Maryland Probate Records, Prerogtive Court Abstracts 1720-1724) She is shown administering her husband's estate in court records of 1723 and 1727. Rodah was head of household in Baltimore 100 1725, 1730-1740. In 1743, Rhoda Bowen, widow of William, gave son William Bowen 1500A Goshen and 100A Mayfields which she received from her father.

She married Stevens White. Stevens was born September 10, 1679. Stevens was the son of John White and Sarah Keyser. Stevens died 1718 in Somerset Co., MD. (Clayton Torrence, Old Somerset, p.461) John Watts and Robert Nairne were named by William Whittington d. 1720 Somerset MD to administer estate for son of Steven White, William White. (Will of William Whittington dtd March 28, 1719 Somerset Co. MD, copied by C. Hayward Marshall, Sr., Clerk's Office)

Stevens' will was dated October 6, 1718, prob. December 8, 1718. He named son, William, children of his three sisters: Tabitha, Priscilla and Sarah, and his wife Katharine. He also named his deceased brother's son, John, and daughters Rose and Sarah, his cousin Rose Drummond, and William Whittington as his executor.

Stevens called John Watts his "brother." John Watts had married his sister, Priscilla, and would have been his brother-in-law. Stevens also named Robert Nairne; Robert Nairne, Jr. married John Watts' daughter Jeanett about 5-6 years after Stevens' death, and it is unclear what relation there was between Stevens and Robert Nairne, Sr. Robert Nairne, Jr. and his father, Robert Nairne, were witnesses to Steven's will. (V. L. Skinner, Jr., Somerset Co. MD Will Book EB9, Brookeville, MD, 1987, p.16)

John White left his son, Stevens, "Cordicoll"/"Cadicutt." In 1761, this property was given by Stevens grandson, Stevens, to his brother, Elias White, and to Stevens' son, William Stevens White. (Ruth T. Dryden, Land Records of Somerset Co. MD, Family Line, Westminster, MD, 1985.)

She married James Round (Rownd) after 1708.

Named his wife Ursilia, sons: Henry, Richard, Edmund and Whittington, and daughters: Lacey, Ursilia and Joyce, and his brother, Edmund. Richard's father named his grandsons: Edmund, Henry and Richard, as sons of Richard and his wife Rosana. The other children are probably by Ursula Whittington. However, the will of William Whittington named two sons of Ursula Whittington: Edmond and Whittington??

The Bayly/Bayley line is NOT solid and has been pieced together from will and land abstracts. The ensuing Edmund/Edmonds can well be confused. William Whittington d.1720 Somerset Co. MD named the sons of Ursula as "kinsmen." (Myers & Dorman, Purse & Person, p. 548) (Children of Ursula provided by Dan Trimble)

Ursula Scarburgh and Richard Bayly(Jr.)(Capt.) had the following children:

Darnell, The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, Vol. 47, No. 161, October, 1949)

Southy Whittington and Mary Fassitt had the following children:

27. Atalanta4 Whittington (William3, William2, 1) was born in Somerset Co., MD 1691.

MD, Family Line, Westminster, MD, 1985.) (Records of William Whittington transcribed by Mrs. M. C. Darnell, The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, Vol. 47, No. 161, October, 1949)

Atalanta Whittington and Stevens White had the following child:

child + 62 i. William5 White.

Fifth Generation

30. John5 Bowen (Rhoda4 Fassitt, Elizabeth3 Whittington, Andrew2, 1) was born in Somerset Co., MD about 1719. John died 1772 in Worcester Co., MD.

He married Sarah Fooks before 1756. Sarah was the daughter of Daniel Fooks and Sarah Roach. Sarah died after 1783 in Worcester Co., MD. In 1740, Daniel Fooks left tract of A71 to his daughter, Sarah. In 1756, Sarah and John Bowin of Worcester Co. sold the 100 acres to Clement Parker. (Ralph T. Whitelaw, Virginia's Eastern Shore, p. 933)

1783 tax list Worcester County shows Sarah Bowen at Hogsnorton, Queponco. He is shown in land records as John Bowen Jr. Will dated January 2, 1772, probate July 3, 1772. He named wife Sarah and left her 200 acres "Hogsnorten" and then to sons William and John; sons Elisha and Nathaniel, daughters Rhoday, Rachel, Caty and Hessey Bowin; witnesses: Jehu Houston, John Burbage and Edward Hammond. (Ruth T. Dryden, Worcester Co. Will Book JW4, f.85)

John Bowen and Sarah Fooks had the following children:

child 63 i. William6 Bowen. He married Ann(wife of William Bowen).

child 64 ii. Rachel Bowen.

child 65 iii. Hessey Bowen.

child 66 iv. Catherine 'Caty' Bowen. Catherine died after 1809 in Worcester Co., MD. She married Richard Hall after 1796. Richard was born about 1739. Richard was the son of William Hall. Richard died before February 11, 1800 in Worcester Co., MD. Administration was granted to Catherine Hall and Nathaniel Bowin, February 11, 1800 Court. (David V. Heise, Worcester Co., MD Orphans Court Proceedings, p. 294) Administrative Bond March 14, 1800 Catharine Hall administrator for estate and John Bowen and George Hall held bond. (Vern Skinner, Abstracts of Worcester Co. Estate Docket 1742-1820, 1992, Brookeville, MD) Inventory March 14, 1800, recorded June, 1800: ½ Negro Tilbory, 28 years old, $80, appraisers Edmond Cropper & Charles Hammond; creditors Thomas Hall & Sam. 4/7/1787 a Richard Hall & William Sullivan listed as Next of Kin to Thomas Lamberson, dec'd, of Wor. Co., adm. bond dtd 2/11/1786, adm. Leah Lamberson & John White. By Apr. 1787 Leah had married George Taylor. (Wm. Sullivan and Thomas Lamberson were grandsons of Thomas Midgley)

Richard's sons, Thomas and George, are probably the Thomas and George Hall enumerated next to each other at Acquanco in the 1800 census. George and Thomas are age 26-45. There is another George Hall 26-45 further down on the page and a Thomas Hall, 45+, nine households from him. The second Thomas and George Halls in the same area are very probably related to Richard (nephews).

It is not proved that Richard Hall was the son of William Hall d. 1760. It is also not known if all references to Richard Hall in Worcester County apply to this particular Richard. However, it does appear Richard was a house joiner who was at Coulbourn District. He is most probably the Richard Hall who held bond on the estate of William Tull. Under the Richard son of William Hall theory, William Tull would have been his first cousin.

William Hall d. 1760 was at "Creedwell," which adjoined "Killglass." Whittington Bowen, uncle of Caty Bowen Hall, was at "Killglass." Caty Bowen Hall's father, John, was at "Hogsnorten," which is not located. Catherine did not sign on the "Colrane" deed in 1796 and may not have married Richard Hall until after this date. She was named in the 1809 will of her sister, Rhoda, and the 1809 will of her brother, Elisha.

With her brother, Nathaniel, she was granted administration of the estate of Richard Hall in 1800.

Rhoda Bowen, sister of Catherine Bowen Hall, wife of Richard Hall, named Sarah Hall, wife of Thomas Hall, and an Elizabeth Hall in her 1809 will.

He mentioned that property he bought in Basket Town from Josiah Collins be sold. (Ruth T. Dryden, Worcester Co., MD Will Book MH, f.95)

February Court, 1783 shows Sarah Bowen detaining Nathaniel Bowen, orphan. Nathaniel Bowen, of John,17, bound to John Bowen to learn the trade of cabinet maker; sureties were George Jones and Selby Parker. (David V. Heise, Worcester Co. MD Orphans Court Proceedings, p.41, 42)

Administration of estate of Richard Hall was granted to Catherine Hall and Nathaniel Bowin, February 11, 1800 Court. (David V. Heise, Worcester Co., MD Orphans Court Proceedings, p. 294) His brother, John, named his guardian for his minor children in 1802.

Will dated May 19, 1809, probate September 26, 1809. He named brother Nathaniel and sisters Rhoda Bowen and Catty Hall. Witnesses: Parker Collins, Elisha Bowen and William Houston.

31. Whittington5 Bowen (Rhoda4 Fassitt, Elizabeth3 Whittington, Andrew2, 1) was born in Somerset Co., MD before 1723. Whittington died 1790 in Worcester Co., MD.

He married Lavina Fleming before 1747. Lavina was the daughter of Lodowick Fleming(Jr.) and Massey(wife of Lodowick Fleming). Lavina died 1771. He is in his mother's household at Baltimore 100 1739-1740.

Levina received land at "Landown" which had been her father's. In 1761, Levina and Whittington Bowen owned the property. In 1767, John Bowen willed 100 acres to his son, Billy. 1770, William Bowen of John with wife Sarah and Comfort, widow of John, sold 100 acres. 1785 William and Sarah sold 54 3/4 acres. 1789, Whittington Bowen sold 7 acres to Soloman Bradford that came at the death of his mother. (Ruth T. Dryden, Worcester Land Records, p. 352)

Levina Fleming received 300 acres of "Killglass" in 1727 from her father. "Bowens Industry" was patented in 1752 by Whittington Bowen and Edward Franklin in a resurvey from "Killglass." In 1763 and 1771 Whittington & Levina Bowen sold portions, and in 1789 Whittington Bowen Sr. sold part of "Killglas" to Whittington Jr. for 5 shillings. (Ruth T. Dryden, Worcester Land Records, p. 345)

His will dated September 3, 1779, probated April 10, 1790 mentioned sons Whittington, William, James and Tennant, and daughters Levinia, Rhoda and Sarah. Witnesses Mary Green, Caty White and Joseph Green. Whittington and James were appointed executors of his estate on April 10, 1790 with bond by Peal Franklin and Matthias Davis. (Vernon L. Skinner, Abstracts of Worcester Co. Estate Docket 1742-1820, 1993)

Dates of birth for children from uncited submission.

Whittington Bowen and Lavina Fleming had the following children:

child + 71 i. James6 Bowen.

child 72 ii. Hetty Bowen. She was not named in Whittington's 1779 will.

child 73 iii. Mary Bowen was born April 29, 1747. She was not named in Whittington's 1779 will.

child 74 iv. Salathiel Bowen was born in Worcester Co., MD April 26, 1749. Whittington did not name a son Salathiel in his will. That Whittington had a son named Salathiel and the exact date of birth for Salathiel was taken from an uncited submission. Whittington may have had a son by this name who died before Whittington made his will and the older Salathiel, living in 1812, is not the son of Whittington.

A Salathiel Bowen signed as next of kin for Levin Bowen in 1788 and witnessed the will of Joshua Gray in 1812, Worcester Co., MD.

A Salathiel Bowen appears to be in Queponco 100 in 1790, 1800 and 1810 census. By ages in census, his date of birth would be between 1765-1774. This Salathiel Bowen is apparently the father of James Bowen: Marriage record for James of Salathiel to Sally Nock, March 11, 1824 Worcester Co., MD. James and Sally had at least one son, Robert Bowen, who married Catherine Claywell on December 23, 1850 Worcester Co., MD.

Notes on Salathiel Bowen b.c. 1765. 1800 p. 198, same page as Hampton and Peter Long, son and grandson of David Long, and an Isaac Bowen (Nathaniel d. 1815 had son Isaac). 1810 enumerated next to an Elihu Bowen p. 603. (There should be 2 Elisha Bowens in 1800 and one still living in 1809, so probably in 1810 census. There are no Elisha Bowens or Bowins, but in 1800 there are two Elihus)

child 75 v. Lydia Bowen was born January 15, 1750. She was not named in Whittington's 1779 will.
